Today's Living Hope

How Are We to Respond? + New York's Controversial Reproductive Health Act

Episode Summary

This Saturday's Show is going to power-packed! We have a lot in store for you. Starting in the 1st hour will be Jim Walton from The 3rd Choice. With so much going on in the world, we as Christians need to help each other know how best to respond. Jim and Linda will be discussing national and world events with a Christian eye toward biblical responses. This will be a very informative segment! In the second half of our show, this Saturday join us for a discussion with the attorneys who represent victims harmed by New York's controversial Reproductive Health Act. The lawsuit was just filed against Governor Andrew Cuomo and others. The Plaintiffs seek to vindicate rights for women and children affected by changes in New York law under the Reproductive Health Act. This class action represents the first time a New York abortion law is challenged for violating both women's rights and the rights of children, including later-term, or viable, unborn children. The complaint asks the court to acknowledge First Amendment rights for women whose unborn children are killed by assailants, to clarify dangerous ambiguities in the RHA that impact women, and to affirm existing, but previously unrecognized, rights for near-term unborn children and children who survive abortion. We'll speak with Teresa Collett, a professor at St. Thomas University Law School and a renowned lecturer on human rights and abortion. Professor Collett has represented numerous clients in abortion cases in state and federal courts, as well as internationally. We'll also speak with Christen Civiletto, an experienced WNY attorney who handles complex state and federal cases, including local environmental ones. She has been on this show before to talk about difficult issues we face in WNY. And finally, we will have Michele Sterlace, an attorney and the executive director of Feminists Choosing Life of New York. We'll tackle several subjects relating to abortion, domestic and intimate partner violence, and the numerous ways in which the Reproductive Health Act harms women and children. They will also tell us about the Women's Alliance Against Violence, which was formed to fight unconstitutional laws like this one.
